Die design, metallurgy, coating chemistry, facade engineering. The people we struggle to hire are the ones who have done it on a line, not only on a drawing.
The group employs 1,840 people, around 240 of them in engineering and technical roles across die design, metallurgy, coating chemistry, quality and facade engineering. Extrusion is unusual in that the drawing and the line are the same problem: a die that is elegant on screen and slow to correct on the press costs more than a plain one that runs.
Our apprentice programme takes twenty-four people a year across extrusion, finishing and fabrication, on a two-year rotation that includes six months in quality. Putting apprentices through quality is deliberate: someone who has measured coating thickness for six months operates a coating line differently afterwards, and no amount of instruction produces the same effect.
Engineering graduates join on an eighteen-month programme rotating through three plants before they settle. We sponsor final-year projects on die correction and on extrusion of high-recycled-content billet, which is where our own open problems are — the sponsorship is not outreach, it is us buying attention on something we have not solved.
