The electronic warranty label

A paper warranty slip is lost within a year of handover. Registering the door instead of the paperwork makes the record survive the occupier.

A warranty on a building product usually fails administratively rather than technically: the slip is handed to a contractor, the contractor hands over the building, and two years later nobody can say which door was fitted or when.

An electronic label moves the record off the paper. The label on the curtain resolves to the installation record — section, batch, finish, date, installer — so the door carries its own history regardless of who owns the building now.

It also settles the counterfeit question at the same time. A label that resolves is a curtain that came off the line; a label that does not is a conversation worth having before the door is accepted.

For a distributor the useful consequence is a service call that starts with the right parts. Knowing the exact section and batch before the van leaves is the difference between one visit and two.
